Shortly after I bade farewell to Li and she began walking down the street toward Mrs. Mainwaring’s house, I saw her wave her arms in the air over her head. Squinting, it took me a few seconds to realize she was being pelted with dried peppercorns from the pepper trees creating a canopy over Marengo Avenue.

“Stacy!” I shrieked. “Stop it!”

Harold walked up behind me. “Huh? What are you yelling about?”

“Look! I’m sure Stacy’s the one hurling those peppercorns at Li!” I pointed. Li had started running. Fortunately, Mrs. Mainwaring’s house wasn’t too far away, but I felt bad that Li should be rewarded for helping us by being bombarded with peppercorns.

“What’s goin’ on?” asked Mr. Prophet, looming over both Harold and me from behind. He was even taller than Sam, although he stooped a bit.

Again I pointed at Li, who was graceful as a gazelle as she dashed down the middle of Marengo Avenue. “Stacy’s ghost is flinging peppercorns at her!”

“Shit,” said Mr. Prophet. “I should’a give her one o’ them Voodoo jujus.”

“I should have thought of doing that too,” I said, feeling guilty for not having anticipated this sort of thing. “Stacy isn’t going to approve of anyone who tries to help us.”

“Well,” said Mr. Prophet philosophically. “If there’s any woman in the world can save herself, it’s Li. Look there. She’s reachin’ into her pocket.”

By this time, it was difficult for me to see Li through the thick foliage of the pepper trees, but I could just make out what Mr. Prophet had seen. Li did reach into her pocket. When she removed her hand, she threw something into the air. It looked like sand or something, although I couldn’t tell from this distance.

I did hear a loud, “Eeeeeeeee!” issue from the air around Li, and the peppercorn storm stopped instantly.

“Ha,” said Mr. Prophet in a satisfied voice. “Told ya so.”

“I wonder what she threw at Stacy,” I said.

“Could’a been salt,” said Mr. P.

“Or juniper berries,” said Harold.

“Li, she’s got her own magic,” said Mr. Prophet. “Stacy better not mess with her.”

“I don’t want Stacy to mess with her either,” I told him. “I appreciate her help so much. And yours too.”

“What about mine?” asked Harold, pretending to be offended.

“I appreciate your help, too, Harold. In fact, you help me all the time.”

“Better believe it,” he said. “But I’m going home, too. If Mother isn’t still in a state tomorrow, we really should figure out what to do with Stacy’s body. I mean, her physical body. We know where her non-physical body went.”

“You mean her soul? Is her soul the ghost?” I asked, honestly curious.

“Did she have a soul?” asked Harold.

“If she did, it was a rotten one. Her dead body will be decomposing pretty soon too,” I said. Mean of me, I know.

“Ew. Daisy!” said Harold reproachfully.

“They keep corpses in refrigerated rooms,” I said. “At least I think they do. I’ll ask Sam.”

“I expect they do,” said Mr. Prophet. “You either got to freeze ’em or plant ’em fast.
